Why is it called a "blade battery"?

Blade batteries are named according to their shape. Because batteries are more flat and elongated than traditional square batteries, they are called blade batteries.

The so-called "blade battery" is actually a large battery cell longer than 0.6 m developed by BYD, arranged together in an array, and inserted into the battery pack like a "blade". On the one hand, it can improve the space utilization rate and energy density of the power battery pack; on the other hand, it can ensure that the battery cell has a sufficiently large heat dissipation area, and can conduct internal heat to the outside, thereby matching higher energy density.

BYD blade battery technology uses a new cell length to flatten the cell design. According to the BYD patent, the company's blade battery can reach a maximum length of 2500mm, which is more than 10 times that of a conventional ordinary lithium iron phosphate battery, which can greatly improve the group efficiency of the battery.

At the same time, compared with the rectangular aluminum case battery solution, the blade battery technology also has the advantage of good heat dissipation.

Through the patented blade battery technology, the specific energy density of a lithium-ion battery with an ordinary battery pack volume can be increased from 251Wh / L to 332Wh / L, an increase of more than 30%. At the same time, because the battery itself can take on mechanical strengthening, the battery The manufacturing process of the packs is simple, and the manufacturing cost is reduced.

The patent can directly arrange a plurality of single cells in a battery pack side by side, which not only saves material costs, but also reduces labor costs. It is expected that the overall cost will be reduced by 30%.

What are the advantages over other power batteries?

From the perspective of positive and negative electrode materials, currently the most widely used power batteries on the market are ternary lithium batteries and lithium iron phosphate batteries, but these two types of power batteries have their own advantages. Among them, ternary lithium-ion batteries are divided into ternary-NCM (nickel-cobalt-manganese) and ternary-NCA (nickel-cobalt-aluminum). Ternary-NCM occupies most of the market in ternary lithium-ion batteries.

Compared with ternary lithium batteries, lithium iron phosphate batteries have higher safety, longer cycle life, and lower costs, but there is less room for improvement in energy density.

But if the short board with low energy density of lithium iron phosphate batteries can be solved, will not all the problems be solved? This is true in theory, but the difficulty is quite large, so only CTP technology is available, which can maximize the volume specific energy density of the battery without changing the positive and negative electrode materials.

It is reported that the weight specific energy density of BYD's "blade battery" can reach 180Wh / kg, which is about 9% higher than before. This data is not weaker than the "811" ternary lithium battery, which means that the "blade battery" is being retained. At the same time of high safety, high stability and low cost, the lithium iron phosphate battery has reached the energy density of high-level ternary lithium batteries.

Although BYD's "blade battery" has a weight specific energy density that is 9% higher than the previous generation battery, the volume specific energy density has increased by as much as 50%. This is the true advantage of the "blade battery".
